AgSquared Beta Overview from Jeff Froikin Gordon on Vimeo.

For the 2012 season, Slow Acres will be focusing on organic hops, eggs, and producing a small amount of organic produce to be distributed privately. We plan to add a small amount of livestock in the coming months as well, however, this will be for our own use for now until we are ready to grow.

One thing that we truly believe here, is that you have to experience everything first-hand in order to truly understand it. Is that any different with other areas of life? It is much easier for us to be compassionate toward a cause or person, if we have been in their shoes.

Similarly, each season we grow produce, we learn something new and plan for changes in the next season. With my Permaculture Certification studies under way, we are already taking a different approach to our planning.

Last year I heard about a program which seemed perfect for our needs, Ag Squared. What is Ag Squared?

AgSquared is online farm management software that helps you stay on top of your season plan and keep organized, effective records that help you make informed decisions with each passing year.

I have just signed up for an account, and am hoping to streamline our work and use this program to do the planning, organization (exactly as they say above). I will be sharing the set-up process and keep you updated on my progress with it. I am easily frustrated by programs and often revert to a pen and paper, but I’m really hoping this program delivers on its promise!

An Explanation

Slow Acres Catering goodies

I have quickly realized that many people will find this blog thanks to the efforts of my brother Johnny, and sister-in-law Elise. The two lived in Peterborough through the summer season and represented the Slow Acres brand at the Peterborough and Lakefield Farmer’s Market. My brother, an amazing pastry chef, and sister-in-law, a skillful chef as well, really made their mark on the community with their delicious treats.

The two have moved on and won’t be working the markets this year, so it isn’t likely you will see SA represented at the markets. Sadly, the door of the delicious pastry portion of the business is closed – for now.

Welcome to slow acres…

Welcome to slow acres, the blog! We are so excited to embark on a new adventure, and share what we learn – from success to mishaps – along the way.

You can learn all about who “we” are over here, in “the family” section of the blog, but to break it down simply; 2 dreamers + 2 rambunctious little boys + 1 wild dog + 100 acres of rolling hill’d beauty = slow acres.

For our first post, I (Heidi) wanted to write about why I chose to start this blog. If you know me, you’re likely not surprised by this move.

You can find me elsewhere online over at The Conscious Perspective, a blog I began in 2011 focusing on many of my passions, including personal growth, spirituality, humanitarianism, and spreading the good word about “conscious” organizations, books, documentaries, people, and more. It’s my virtual happy place where I able share and learn and talk about subjects which I believe need to be discussed.

This blog will focus on our home base.

We are currently re-shaping our futures by putting the focus on what is important to us – the health and well-being of our family, friends and community – by creating a sustainable space that will serve both as an example for other families, as well as a community where we can share and can learn together.

I have spent years seeking a resource to learn how to start an organic homestead from scratch, with little success. Life is busy and the days fly by, so we’re taking baby steps to get there.

We hope you will join us.

Heidi
